Ban Gioc Falls: Nature's Masterpiece on the Vietnam-China Border

Ban Gioc Falls (or Detian Falls as referred to in China) ranks as the fourth largest transnational waterfall in the world, following Iguazu Falls (Brazil – Argentina), Victoria Falls (Zambia – Zimbabwe), and Niagara Falls (Canada – United States).

With a total width of 208 m, a depth of 60 m, and a height of 70 m, Ban Gioc Falls is considered the most beautiful waterfall in Vietnam. According to Travel + Leisure Magazine, Ban Gioc is one of the 21 most beautiful waterfalls in the world.

This explains why Vietnam receives approximately 30,000 visitors to Ban Gioc Waterfalls each year, whereas China attracts nearly 1 million tourists.

Read on to discover the best time to visit, what to do, where to stay, and what local delicacies to try for an unforgettable trip to Ban Gioc Waterfalls.

How to get to Ban Gioc Falls

In Vietnam, Ban Gioc Falls is located in Dam Thuy Commune, Trung Khanh District, Cao Bang Province. One interesting fact about Ban Gioc Falls is that, as a transnational waterfall, it’s located on the borderline between Vietnam and China, on the Quay Son River (which originates in China and flows downstream before re-entering China). In China, Detian Falls is located in Daxin County, Chongzuo City, Guangxi.

Each country has access to a portion of the waterfall, with China owning the eastern half of the falls and Vietnam the other half on top of the side waterfall about 100 m away. From Hanoi, the distance to Trung Khanh District, Cao Bang, is about 330 km to the northeast, which takes 6 to 7 hours by car or bus. Once in Trung Khanh town, Ban Gioc Waterfalls is about 20 km away, which takes another 30 minutes by car or motorbike.

Best time to visit Ban Gioc Falls

Ban Gioc Falls is a year-round destination with diverse natural beauty. During the dry season (from October to May), Ban Gioc Falls is gentle, with a lower water volume that doesn’t extend across its entire width. This, however, doesn’t make Ban Gioc Falls underwhelming. This time of the year brings clearer skies and mild temperatures, making the area surrounding Ban Gioc Falls suitable for trekking and outdoor exploration.

The best time to visit Ban Gioc Waterfalls is perhaps from June to September, during the rainy season when the waterfall is at its most majestic. Heavy rainfall from upstream in China increases the water volume, creating powerful cascades that crash down into the Quay Son River. This is an ideal time for photography and sightseeing. The lush greenery surrounding the falls also reaches its peak vibrancy during this time.
