Phong Nha Caves Exploration Museum: Free Entry and What to Expect
Quang Tri (formerly Quang Binh) has long been known as the cave kingdom of the world with 472 discovered caves. This is the proud result after 36 years (1990 - 2026) of hard work in exploring, measuring, and surveying by the British Vietnam Caving Expedition Team led by Mr. Howard Limbert and his colleagues. To honor these great contributions, and at the same time create an opportunity for those who do not have enough health conditions or budget to directly trek through forests and wade through streams into the core zone of the heritage site, Oxalis Adventure has officially opened its doors to welcome guests at the Phong Nha Caves Exploration Museum.
This is a Phong Nha tourist destination that keeps valuable heritage values. Thanks to this, visitors can learn about the journeys of discovering underground wonders through a visual, lively presentation that combines scientific knowledge and technology.

The mission to honor exploration legends
Looking back at history, before 1990, Phong Nha was a remote village located along the banks of the Son River, almost completely separated from the outside world. Most of the local people at that time made a living based on the forest through loggers or collecting forest products. To them, the caves were simply a part of daily life, used as places to shelter from the rain, sources of fresh water, or landmarks in the deep forest.
The turning point that changed the destiny of this land began in the early 1990s, when the British Vietnam Caving Expedition Team led by Mr. Howard Limbert conducted surveys, recorded, and took the first precious documentary photos. After more than 35 years of hard searching with self-funded budgets, Mr. Howard Limbert's exploration team successfully discovered 472 caves with a total length of more than 254 km. These silent efforts have brought names like Paradise Cave, Hang Va, Hang En, and especially Son Doong - the world's largest natural cave - to the international level.
The Phong Nha Caves Exploration Museum was born to recognize and honor the great contributions of Mr. Howard Limbert, Mrs. Debora Claire Limbert, Mr. Ho Khanh, and the members of the expedition team. This is a "living museum" that tells the story of the persistent spirit of the people who silently drew the map of Vietnam's caves on the international stage.

The unique architecture of Phong Nha Caves Exploration Museum mimics natural cave spaces
The point that leaves the strongest impression on visitors as soon as they step into the museum is the creative architecture, fully mimicking the space of a natural cave right in the heart of Phong Nha. The ceiling is meticulously shaped with vivid hanging stalactites, combined with an artistic lighting system that recreates the shimmering, magical light of the underground world. The delicate combination of architectural art and simulation techniques creates a unique exhibition space, giving visitors a vivid experience as if they are in a real cave.
Not stopping at the visuals, the modern ventilation system at the center is also carefully calculated to maintain a cool and airy airflow. This design aims to provide the most realistic feeling, helping visitors feel the temperature and microclimate characteristics as if they are directly walking through grand limestone blocks.
The exhibition features a distinctive architecture inspired by natural caves.
What to do at Phong Nha Caves Exploration Museum
The museum is designed to lead visitors through each "chapter" of the history of underground exploration. Instead of just looking at dry information, visitors will experience a multi-sensory journey.
Vivid artifact exhibition area and precious documents
In the exhibition area, you will be led through each chapter of exploration history through precious documentary films and images of the first survey trips since 1990. Visitors can see with their own eyes specialized exploration equipment that went through the harshest conditions underground with experts, from ropes and specialized lights to measuring tools.
Below is a detailed summary of the stages of exploring and surveying the cave system in the area:
- 1990 - 1995: The British - Vietnamese Cave Expedition Group together with Hanoi University started the survey plan, officially opening the journey to conquer the oldest limestone block in Southeast Asia.
- 1996 - 2000: After initial successes, the explorers continued to return in 1997 and 1999 to expand the scope of research deeper into dangerous and less-traveled mountainous forest areas.
- 2001 - 2005: By the end of 2001, the Phong Nha system reached a total length of 44.5 km, confirming its position as the longest cave system in Vietnam at that time.
- 2006 - 2010: The chain of expeditions during this period brought the Ke Bang mountain block to a world-class status, especially the event of officially discovering Son Doong cave - the largest natural cave on the planet.
- 2011 - 2015: This phase marked a period of high-intensity exploration, focusing on detailed mapping and searching for complex hydrological connections between cave systems.
- 2016 - 2020: Celebrating the 30-year milestone of exploration in Vietnam, the expert team conducted diving surveys of the underground river beneath Son Doong and found more than 10 km of new cave passages in neighboring districts.
- 2021 - 2025: Although interrupted by the pandemic, the expedition team returned strongly in 2023 and 2024, recording more than 15 km of new cave passages and continuing to confirm the endless potential of the "cave kingdom".
Visitors will be guided through various stages of the exploration process.
In particular, the detailed cave map system meticulously hand-drawn is invaluable artifacts proving the serious scientific research process. The exhibition area also applies visual experience technologies to help visitors clearly feel the overwhelming scale of the wonders.

Experience the top notch Son Doong 5D VR at the museum
The most impressive and highly anticipated highlight at the museum is the opportunity to experience the Son Doong "expedition" through modern 5D VR virtual reality technology with super sharp 8K image quality. On a 180-degree frame, the footage taken by photographer Ryan Deboodt brings beautiful scenes published widely for the first time. The 5D virtual reality system brings viewers to the most realistic sense of feeling as if actually stepping inside the earth.
For those who are nurturing the dream of setting foot in Son Doong but have to wait until 2028, this is the place to help you get the best preparation when you see specialized exploration equipment, the meticulously hand-drawn map system, and hear never-before-published "behind-the-scenes" stories.
Experience Son Doong Cave in immersive 5D virtual reality.
During the 15-minute virtual exploration journey, every sense of the visitor is awakened by the combination of vivid sound and physical effects systems such as wind, fog, shaking, and temperature sensations when sunlight shines in. Visitors will clearly feel the cold air surrounding them, the thin mist creeping in, and the unique echoes of the cave space.
Each movement is guided smoothly according to the real terrain, bringing a feeling of immersing oneself in the grand space of the world's largest cave in the most realistic way. This is the "magic door" for visitors who do not have the conditions of time, health, or budget to directly explore Son Doong but still want to discover this journey in a completely different way.
How Phong Nha Caves Exploration Museum supports the local community
The launch of the museum is not only for tourism promotion but also carries a humanitarian mission. All revenue from the 5D VR experience activity will be directly contributed to the Oxalis Foundation.
This source of funding is used to implement community support programs, improve life for local people, grant scholarships to difficult students, and build schools in the area. This confirms Oxalis's commitment to developing tourism associated with social responsibility and sustainable conservation.
In fact, tourism activities in Phong Nha have created stable jobs for more than 5,000 local workers, contributing to changing the appearance of a land from poverty to a prominent destination on the world adventure tourism map. The Phong Nha Caves Exploration Museum is an important link connecting natural heritage with the public, helping to raise community awareness about geological and geomorphological values and the importance of heritage conservation.
The museum is an ideal destination for many groups of people, from tourists, families with young children to pupils, students, and researchers. This will surely be a destination not to be missed in the journey to discover the Phong Nha - Ke Bang cave kingdom in 2026.
