Oxalis Adventure utilizes local food sources from cooperatives

With the goal of supporting local communities and developing the local economy, Oxalis prioritizes employing local labor and gradually changing its product sourcing. This decision is not only economically driven but also stems from the desire to accompany the communities where Oxalis operates. By prioritizing the use of local labor and on-site products, Oxalis helps create stable jobs for local people while contributing to the region’s sustainable economic development.

Oxalis has increased the purchase of clean food sourced from local cooperatives in areas where its tours operate, such as Phong Nha, Tan Hoa, and Cao Quang. Food from the cooperatives is always guaranteed to be fresh and of good quality, as the production and supply process takes place on-site, without the risk of quality loss during transportation. This not only brings economic benefits but also helps Oxalis reduce plastic waste and protect the environment.

Cooperating with local cooperatives also brings Oxalis closer to its goal of achieving Net-zero carbon emissions, especially in Scope 3, which relates to the supply chain. Compared to purchasing food from supermarkets, products from cooperatives not only shorten transport distances but also reduce costs and negative environmental impacts.

Moreover, this shift helps Oxalis create a sustainable and stable supply chain. Maintaining long-term cooperative relationships with local people allows the company to ensure a reliable and steady food source. At the same time, it strengthens the bond between the business and the community, helping to build a model of sustainable community economic development.

Criteria for selecting local partners of Oxalis

Oxalis has chosen the Tâm Sen Safe Agricultural Cooperative (in Sơn Lộc Commune, Bố Trạch District) and the Tân Vĩnh Phát Comprehensive Agricultural Service Cooperative (in Cao Quảng Commune, Tuyên Hóa District) as food suppliers based on specific criteria:

  • Ensuring that pigs and cattle are raised locally with clear origins (for the cooperative in Cao Quảng) and that pigs are raised on the cooperative’s farm (for the cooperative in Sơn Lộc)
  • No use of growth enhancers or other chemical feeds
  • Animals must be inspected by veterinarians before slaughter and stamped according to regulations on animal control
  • Slaughterhouses must meet state standards (hold a Food Safety and Hygiene Certification)
  • Ensuring quality, quantity, and specifications as required by Oxalis

To best serve tours in the Tân Hóa area, from June 2024, Oxalis Adventure has partnered with Tân Vĩnh Phát Cooperative to supply pork and beef. This cooperative raises pigs and cattle using traditional methods, feeding them on naturally available local resources such as grass, green vegetables, fruits, sugarcane pulp, and rice bran without using growth stimulants. Pigs are raised for about 5.5 to 6 months, ensuring they reach optimal commercial weight and meat quality, providing fresh, safe products for tourists.

The households of Tan Vinh Phat Cooperative are a reliable source of pork for Oxalis due to traditional farming processes.

From tour season 2025, Oxalis Adventure will collaborate with the Tâm Sen Safe Agricultural Cooperative to supply food for tours in the Phong Nha, Bố Trạch area. This cooperative is known for its herbal pig farming model developed by Ms. Nguyễn Thị Hoài Sen in Sơn Lộc Commune, Bố Trạch District. Instead of using industrial feed, the cooperative prepares pig feed from fresh fish protein bought from nearby fishing villages, combined with rice bran, corn, and rice. Notably, the feed is also supplemented with various herbs, dried and ground, including turmeric, bitter leaf, ginger, galangal, black turmeric, citronella, and garlic. The feed is processed into pellets and used on the same day, helping to enhance the pigs’ natural immunity and meat quality.

The Tâm Sen Cooperative operates under a closed farming model with a scale of 500-600 pigs and received certification for meeting Good Animal Husbandry Practices (VietGAHP) in 2023. The difference in their farming and feed preparation methods significantly improves meat quality, providing a delicious and safe product for consumers.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoai Sen - Director of Tâm Sen Safe Agricultural Cooperative started a business with a model of raising pigs from herbs.

Tâm Sen Cooperative harvests herbs from gardens and from local people to produce animal feed.

Additionally, Oxalis Adventure also uses fresh vegetables, fruits, and greens produced locally for meals during the tours. Instead of importing from other suppliers, Oxalis chooses to partner with local farmers to source the freshest food, cultivated naturally without chemicals.

By changing its food supply sources, Oxalis enhances the quality of meals for guests by using fresh local ingredients, from meat to vegetables. Guests have the opportunity to enjoy a diverse and appealing menu, from delicious grilled meats to fresh stir-fried vegetables. This change enriches each meal with flavors, enhancing the culinary experience for cave exploration tours.

Oxalis Adventure is proud to contribute to positive changes for the community while providing customers with unique and memorable travel experiences.
