Tú Làn Lodge’s Wastewater Treatment System: Elevating Green Tourism Standards

Tú Làn Lodge, located in Tân Hóa village, Quảng Bình, has implemented a wastewater treatment system to meet environmental protection standards. This initiative plays a crucial role in minimizing the negative impact of domestic wastewater on the natural environment, preserving water resources, and supporting the local community. Designed and installed by Quảng Bình’s Center for Natural Resources and Environment Monitoring, the system has been operational since October 2023, with a maximum treatment capacity of 25m³ of wastewater per day.

Priority on water resource protection: Tú Làn Lodge installs wastewater treatment system

The construction of the wastewater treatment system at Tú Làn Lodge reflects strict compliance with legal environmental regulations. According to Article 53, Clause 1 of the 2020 Environmental Protection Law, service and tourism facilities must manage wastewater to safeguard ecosystems and prevent pollution. Oxalis has implemented this system to ensure treated wastewater at Tú Làn Lodge meets regulatory standards.

The wastewater treatment system at Tú Làn Lodge achieves up to 95% efficiency, removing contaminants and producing safe water before it flows into the Rào Nan River. A portion of the treated water is reused for irrigation, conserving water and reducing demand on groundwater resources. By incorporating biotechnology in the treatment process, the system minimizes chemical usage, reduces environmental impact, supports water resource preservation, and contributes to Oxalis’s sustainable development goals.

Additionally, Tú Làn Lodge has implemented energy-saving measures in the operation of the wastewater treatment system, such as optimizing solar power and using rainwater for internal needs. This not only reduces energy consumption but also raises environmental awareness among visitors, aiming to build a sustainable and harmonious community with nature.

7-step wastewater treatment process

The wastewater treatment system at Tú Làn Lodge follows a specific technological process with individual tanks serving distinct functions:

Step 1: Collection and Preliminary Treatment

Wastewater from bathrooms, showers, and dining areas undergoes preliminary treatment through septic or grease traps before flowing into the equalization tank via piping.

Step 2: Equalization Tank

Wastewater is pumped into the equalization tank, where screens remove smaller solids. Equipped with two automatic pumps, the equalization tank transfers wastewater to the anoxic tank when it reaches the designated level. This tank stabilizes flow and concentration, preventing overload during peak hours. An aeration system in the tank stirs wastewater and supplies oxygen, partially reducing BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand).

Step 3: Anoxic Tank (TK-1)

In the anoxic tank, anaerobic microorganisms break down organic matter, reducing initial pollutants and improving water quality before the next treatment stage.

Step 4: Aerobic Tank (TK-2)

After efficient denitrification in the anoxic tank, wastewater flows to the aerobic tank, where aerobic microorganisms further treat remaining organic pollutants, lowering BOD and COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) levels.

Step 5: Settling Tank (TK-3)

The settling tank separates residual sludge from biologically treated wastewater. Settled sludge is collected, while clear water flows to the disinfection tank. A sludge pump recirculates sludge to the anoxic section, and surplus sludge is directed to the sludge storage tank for stabilization. Sludge settled in the tank is cleaned every 2–4 years, with separated water returning to the treatment system for further processing.

Step 6: Disinfection Tank

In the final step, wastewater enters the disinfection tank, where strong oxidizing agents (typically chlorine or similar substances) are consistently supplied through a metering pump to disinfect and deodorize.

Step 7: Pressure Filtration Tank

After disinfection, wastewater is pumped through a filter to remove any remaining suspended solids, ensuring the outflow meets environmental safety standards.

Meeting discharge standards for environmental safety

Wastewater treated through Tú Làn Lodge’s system complies with QCVN 14:2008/BTNMT, National Technical Regulation on Domestic Wastewater (Column A), ensuring it is safe for discharge into the natural environment. The effective treatment process means that the final discharge is free of pollutants, avoiding any adverse impact on the Rào Nan River near Tân Hóa.

The system is also designed to minimize noise, prevent odor, and control waste generated during operation. It operates automatically 24/7 to ensure treated wastewater consistently meets standards.

Regular maintenance and incident readiness

In addition to its automated operation, the system undergoes regular monthly or quarterly maintenance based on specific tasks, including tank inspection, equipment checks, and replacement of parts if needed. The technical team monitors the system to ensure stable operation and prevent potential incidents.

Although effective, the system occasionally faces challenges during heavy rains, when increased wastewater flow requires adjustments. Supplemental measures are implemented to maintain processing capacity in these situations.

With technology tailored to treat diverse domestic wastewater to standards, the Tú Làn Lodge wastewater treatment system aligns with legal and environmental protection standards set by Oxalis. Through this investment, Tú Làn Lodge not only complies with regulations but also significantly contributes to local sustainable development, protecting clean water resources and fostering a healthy environment for both visitors and the community in Tân Hóa.
