Oxalis Group’s Journey to Net Zero: A Sustainable Transformation
Oxalis – A Pioneer in Green Tourism Development
Oxalis Adventure is a leading company in adventure tourism that has focused on green and sustainable travel since its founding. Over 13 years, Oxalis has grown from a startup into a top adventure travel company in Vietnam, with over 500 workers and serving more than 12,000 customers annually. Our company remains committed to sustainable tourism, respecting nature, and making environmental protection a core principle in its development strategy.
Even before the Net Zero concept became popular, Oxalis was dedicated to sustainable development. It offers attractive, eco-friendly travel products and implements various operational solutions to preserve forests. For example, we organize limited tours for small groups and close tours annually to allow nature to regenerate.
Oxalis prioritizes hiring local workers, including those who previously depended on logging or hunting rare animals due to difficult circumstances. These efforts benefit the community and aim to preserve the beautiful primary forests of Quang Binh, which are a valuable carbon reserve and a habitat for many rare species.
Over the years, the company has consistently implemented plastic waste reduction and recycling practices, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Oxalis is also shifting towards green energy solutions, such as solar power and low-carbon transportation. This includes transitioning from gasoline to electric vehicles. These investments are crucial for the company's sustainable development strategy.
In addition to emission reduction measures, Oxalis is also focusing on adapting to climate change. This approach ensures continuous operations and reduces dependence on natural conditions. As a result, Oxalis developed the weather-adaptive tourism model, exemplified by the Tú Lân Lodge project.
The Tú Làn Lodge project emphasizes reducing greenhouse gas emissions by using environmentally friendly materials during construction. It also features accommodations to withstand extreme weather conditions such as heavy rains and flooding, ensuring ongoing operations. This is a significant goal in Oxalis’s sustainable development strategy.
As environmental issues become more complex, especially global warming, Net Zero has become an international target. Oxalis understands that addressing this issue requires a collective effort from individuals and organizations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to the solution.
According to the "A Net Zero Roadmap for Travel & Tourism" report by the WTTC (World Travel & Tourism Council) from November 2022, the total greenhouse gas emissions from tourism activities were about 5% of global emissions in 2005. By 2018, due to the growth in travel and transportation activities, this figure had risen to 8%. Currently, it is estimated to be around 11% of global emissions. This statistic highlights the need to address emissions from tourism. Specifically, the carbon footprint from transportation activities (such as planes, vehicles, and boats) accounts for 48% of total emissions from tourism.
Oxalis Adventure is committed to integrating Net Zero goals into its tourism operations. This strategy aims to meet global targets and takes practical steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, yielding positive environmental outcomes. Additionally, this approach supports sustainable development and helps preserve valuable resources for current and future generations.
The process of counting and setting Net Zero goals
Understanding the concept and importance of Net Zero, Oxalis has taken initial steps towards achieving this goal. In 2024, Oxalis began implementing a greenhouse gas inventory to measure our emissions. We have selected 2023 as the baseline for comparing emissions in future years as we introduce new solutions to reduce greenhouse gases.
For the first year of implementing inventory management and inventory procedures, Oxalis carried out the following:
Step 1: Employee Training
Before starting the counting process, we conduct a training session for all staff. This training covers greenhouse gas concepts, including Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, Net Zero, and methods to measure emissions for each scope. This step helps employees understand the goals and tasks and improves teamwork for the greenhouse gas inventory process.
Step 2: Conduct Inventory
After training, employees understood the scope of emission sources. We proceeded with the greenhouse gas inventory. This task required close coordination among departments, including Accounting, Operations, and Human Resources. These departments provided the necessary information to ensure accurate, detailed, and usable emission data.
With support from greenhouse gas inventory experts from Hong Kong and Singapore, we collected data throughout 2023 to calculate emissions across all three scopes. Oxalis worked closely with the expert team to complete the greenhouse gas inventory report by early August 2024. After 3 months of focusing on data preparation and consultations, the data was calculated based on reasonable methods, aligning with international standards.
Step 3: Evaluate and Analyze Inventory Reports at Five Facilities
Using clear data related to emissions across all 3 scopes, Oxalis conducted a detailed analysis of operations for each emission category. This allowed us to identify key areas to focus on and set specific reduction targets for the coming years.
Step 4: Set Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Targets
Based on the analysis report and our company's operational reality, we have identified areas to optimize activities further to reduce emissions. We have also clarified our approach and focused resources on solutions to reduce emissions within Scope 1 and 2, which the company can control, before addressing Scope 3.
With a clearer understanding of our internal emission aspects and detailed emission data, Oxalis has set a goal to achieve Net Zero. Specifically, Oxalis aims to maximize emission reductions in Scope 1 and 2 by 2026. From there, we plan to achieve Net Zero across all three scopes by 2030. This will be accomplished by reducing emissions as much as possible and offsetting the remaining carbon through emission-reduction projects or reforestation efforts.
Challenges and Opportunities
On the journey to achieving the Net Zero target, Oxalis faces challenges in changing energy use and adjusting operational processes. It is crucial to continue developing and raising awareness among employees, visitors, and partners to turn Net Zero goals into concrete actions. Even small innovations encounter significant obstacles if they are not communicated, monitored, and continuously improved to enhance long-term effectiveness and achieve real results.
Despite these challenges, Oxalis sees valuable opportunities to improve its brand image and build sustainable customer trust. The commitment to achieving Net Zero is an environmental responsibility and a strategic goal, reflecting the company's long-term sustainable vision.
Today, customers are increasingly concerned about sustainability and value companies' contributions to combating climate change. By leading in emission reduction and building sustainable communities, Oxalis enhances its brand value and establishes itself as a travel company that benefits the environment and society. Oxalis is committed to maintaining and developing sustainable strategies to protect the planet and build a greener future for the next generations.
