In January, the Hang Va area is still affected by the cold air of winter, but it only occurs in intermittent periods and does not last long. From February to April, the weather is cool and refreshing, with lush greenery and a vibrant display of blooming flowers. It is also the breeding season for many butterfly species, so visitors have the opportunity to witness flocks of butterflies soaring through the air along the trekking route.

Most days are warm and sunny without being too hot. The average temperature during the spring season in Hang Va ranges from 21 to 30 degrees Celsius. You will be able to enjoy the lush greenery of the forest, with new shoots and leaves bursting forth after four months of winter sleep. With such pleasant weather, you will not exert yourself too much while trekking through the forest or engaging in the thrilling rope climbing activities that are typical of Hang Va tours. You could even swim through the underground streams in the cave without feeling too cold, as the water temperature is around 20-23 degrees Celsius.

Admire the emerald green lakes containing tower cones

Hang Va is home to thousands of unique and rare cone-shaped stalagmites called tower cones that have developed mysteriously in stagnant lakes, known as rimstone pools. During the months of January and February, these pools are typically filled with shimmering green water, making Hang Va even more enchanting and impressive. The beauty of Hang Va has attracted many photographers who come here to showcase their skills and capture breathtaking photos.

Witness the sunbeams shining through the sinkhole of Hang Nuoc Nut is another unique cave that visitors will discover on this trip. Only in the spring, around noon at 12:30, do visitors have the opportunity to witness the scene of sunbeams shining through two small sinkholes in the cave ceiling. The light brightens up the dark space of the cave, a vivid sight that every visitor would love to experience once.

These are the warm sunny months, with most tours having sunny days throughout. The weather during the summer season in Hang Va may have some days with an outside temperature averaging over 36 - 37℃. However, this won't have much effect on your Hang Va adventure as 2/3 of the travel time is under the shade of trees and inside cool caves. Hang Va is remarkably cooler than other caves, with a stable temperature of 20 - 23℃, while other caves usually fluctuate between 22 - 25℃. Therefore, taking a tour during the summer won't affect your trekking journey much. This is also one of the factors that many visitors consider when choosing to go trekking at Hang Va in the summer season.

Swimming in a cool underground river, dispelling the summer heat

Cool off from the summer heat by swimming in the chilly underground stream. Deep inside Hang Va, there is an active underground river with a stunning emerald green colour and a cool temperature that stays around 18 - 22℃. When exploring Hang Va in the summer, you can freely swim and immerse yourself in the refreshing rivers and waterfalls, which will take away the heat and leave you feeling refreshed.

The cool and refreshing camping area at night

The camping area of the tour is located right in front of Hang Va's entrance amidst the majestic mountains and forests. Camping here during the summer, travellers will feel extremely cool and comfortable due to the cool mist blowing out from inside the cave, functioning like a natural air conditioner in the wilderness.

At the camping site, visitors can enjoy the open space and admire the stars or even the Milky Way, which are incredibly clear without artificial light pollution. The tents provided by Oxalis on all tours are carefully chosen for their suitability, with two mesh doors to keep insects out and two covered doors to keep the cold or light out. Guests can roll up one layer of the tent cover to allow a cool breeze in. Additionally, each tent is equipped with an electric fan to ensure the most comfortable resting experience and prepare for the next adventure.

The trekking route is dry and cool

Most of the time during the trek, you will be walking under the shade of trees and exploring caves. In the summer, the weather is dry and the Phong Nha-Ke Bang forest is dressed in a characteristic bright yellow colour. Although the temperature may be high, the cool and pleasant breeze will accompany you throughout 2/3 of the trek, where you will be walking under the refreshing canopy of trees. As this is a highly adventurous journey, most of the exploration will take place inside Hang Nuoc Nut and Hang Va, where the temperature remains stable and refreshing at 20-23℃. Therefore, even if you participate in the tour during the summer in Quang Binh, you will not feel too hot. In fact, you may feel more refreshed than ever before.

Experience the charm of the firefly season and the poetic beauty of the mountain forest

Hang Va is situated in the middle of a valley surrounded by limestone mountains, creating a typically humid environment. This region is particularly favoured by fireflies, resulting in a longer firefly season than other areas. The season typically lasts from March to July each year. Visitors on the tour will have the opportunity to admire a diverse range of colourful fireflies, with their brilliant displays lighting up the sky. It's a truly magical and poetic experience, not to be missed in the mountain forests of Hang Va.

Unique experiences at Hang Va in autumn and winter

During the autumn and winter season in Hang Va, the average temperature ranges from 18 to 20℃. However, due to the impact of the annual rainy season in Phong Nha and weather from neighbouring Laos, which can cause floods and heavy rainfall in the forest, Oxalis Adventure does not organize tours to Hang Va during this time. Ensuring the safety of our visitors is our top priority, as the area is a water cave with an underground river flowing through it and the valley has many river branches, causing water levels to rise rapidly.

So, although we're sad that we can't offer tours during this time, your safety always comes first. Instead, you can choose to explore tours in the Tu Lan area - where there are caves on higher terrain and unique experiences, or have fun at the Blue Diamond Camp - a place that offers a convenient camping space with diverse exploration activities such as kayaking, SUP, wind sailing, swimming in the underwater pool, cycling, campfire,... or simply indulge in nature at Chay Lap Farmstay or Tu Lan Lodge (in Tan Hoa).
