Transparency – The driving force behind Oxalis’s Net Zero journey

According to Decree 06 from the Government, issued on January 7, 2022, greenhouse gas emission reductions and ozone protection are regulated. Decision 13/2024 from the Prime Minister lists sectors that must do greenhouse gas inventories. High-emission industries like Energy, Transport, Construction, Industrial Processes, and Waste Management are prioritized. However, the Tourism sector is not required to do a greenhouse gas inventory.

However, Oxalis is committed to environmental protection as a key part of its sustainable development strategy. Even though there are no current requirements for greenhouse gas reporting or disclosure, Oxalis has decided to take action. This commitment is not driven by external demands but by the company’s goal to evaluate its environmental impact. By doing so, Oxalis aims to develop an effective emission reduction strategy and work towards achieving its Net Zero goal.

Oxalis aims to be transparent about its emissions data

  • Self-assessment and improvement: For internal purposes, transparent emission data helps Oxalis raise awareness about each person’s and process’s emissions. With this data, we can evaluate how effective our emission reduction measures are and identify areas for improvement. By comparing annual data, we can track progress and adjust our emission reduction strategy as needed
  • Providing information to customers: Customers are increasingly interested in environmental and social issues. We aim to be transparent by offering detailed emission information for each tour. This helps customers understand the environmental impact of their trip. It allows them to choose meaningful travel experiences that positively contribute to the environment
  • Building trust: At Oxalis, transparency is key to building trust. Publicly sharing emission reporting is a commitment and clear evidence of our environmental efforts. This ensures customers and partners can confidently choose Oxalis services and join us in making positive changes
  • Preparing for the future: Inventorying greenhouse gases according to international standards helps Oxalis meet future reporting requirements. It also enables participation in global sustainable business networks, working together towards the common goal of Net Zero

Challenges and Solutions

Implementing greenhouse gas transparency is challenging, especially since few Vietnamese companies conduct emission inventories. Oxalis has faced these difficulties:

  • Lack of Data: Collecting detailed data from suppliers is a major challenge because few companies track greenhouse gas emissions. For Scope 3 emissions, some estimation methods and assumptions are used. This affects data accuracy, but the calculation methods follow general standards, making the results acceptable and reliable
  • Initial Costs: As this is the first year of greenhouse gas inventory, there are initial costs for staff training and consulting services. Despite this, it is a necessary investment to promote environmental protection and work towards a sustainable future and Net Zero goals

Plans for Future Years of Inventory

  • Enhancing Data Management Skills: To ensure increasingly accurate calculations, monitoring input data is crucial. This includes accounting for costs and emission parameters, as well as managing supplier information and their product-specific emissions. Improving data reliability is also essential
  • Staff Training: We will continue organizing training sessions to build staff skills in greenhouse gas inventory and reporting. Our goal is to enable the internal team to handle calculations independently
  • Collaboration with Experts: We will work with independent auditing organizations to ensure data accuracy and objectivity

Looking to the Future

For Oxalis, transparency is more than a responsibility; it is a strategy we set to enhance our operational capabilities gradually. We emphasize a culture of transparency within our organization, where every employee understands their role and its impact. This helps build a practical and effective work culture. We also believe proactively sharing information with our customers is essential to showcase the value of our efforts in reducing emissions. Lastly, transparent information sharing across the supply chain is a key factor in driving strong cooperation towards achieving our Net Zero goals as soon as possible.
